Blackrock Island

Blackrock Island is located just off the northeastern coast of Georgia, USA. The entire island has been owned and developed by the Thornton-Anselme family since the mid-1800s. In 1866, the famous Thornton Hall was built.

Aside from the main hall, Blackrock Island includes plenty of on-shore housing for family and visitors, workhouses for the family’s textile and trading business, a worker’s housing complex, a private family graveyard with crypts, “The Ruins”, and various other office buildings.
The island is said to be always shrouded in a dense, ghostly fog, and is only accessible by a fifteen-minute boat ride through eerie waters. Though the island is often open to visitors and tour groups, the mainland locals are spooked by its presence, and they ominously warn to not visit the island at any time after sunset.

The Thornton Family

In late 1864, husband and wife Jeb Thornton and Sarah Emma Wakeman came into possession of Blackrock Island and established Thornton Hall as the family’s home. Jeb and Sarah—along with their three children Joseph, Miriam, and Harriet—soon after established a cotton mill and business on the island. Every generation to follow has furthered the family’s textiling and trading business on the island.
Over the course of the business, there were multiple incidents on the island which split the family right down the middle and kicked up rumors about both the family and the island being “cursed”.

The current living immediate family members include:
Harper Shelby Thornton,
Clara Thornton,
Wade Thornton-Anselme,
Jessalyn Thornton,
Viola Ann Thornton,
Franklin Thornton Jr.,
and Emmett Wright-Anselme.

These folks, along with others in the family, currently manage the trading and export business which has, in recent years, moved off the island and ashore to the Georgian mainland.

Tragedies and
Incidents

In the years since the Thornton Family took possession of Blackrock Island, two major incidents have occurred: the workhouse incident in the late 1800s and the Thornton Hall fire in 1989.

The Workhouse Incident:
At the end of the 19th century, when the family ran a large textile company from the island, there were many workhouses but originally no separate living quarters for the many workers on the mill. The poor slave workers, forced to sleep and dwell only within the confines of the cramped workhouses, lived terribly. They relied on creating small fires within the space to keep warm for the colder half of the year. On one particularly frigid winter night, the uneducated workers lit a large fire in the crowded workhouse. 54 workers went to sleep that night, and none of them ever woke up. The next morning, the dead bodies were found in various states of sleep within the workhouse, the edges of the building just starting to catch fire. All the workers has unfortunately perished of the smoke and the fumes.

The Thornton Hall Fire:
In 1989, during the 21st birthday party for Charlotte Ann Thornton (Harper’s older sister), the main Thornton Hall caught fire under mysterious circumstances. In the Hall at the time were family members and many of Charlotte’s friends who were invited to the masquerade-themed event. Much of Thornton Hall was destroyed and crumbled to the ground while Viola and the other guests narrowly escaped the spreading flames. Efforts to preserve the historic mansion were not in vain; the fire was put out and the Hall was saved, though somewhat crippled. There was only one life lost that night: that of Charlotte Ann herself, who was trapped inside and burned with the building. Since that fateful day, the mansion has been in slow, unsteady repair and remains uninhabited most of the year save for Viola Thornton, the current keeper. And perhaps a lurking Harper…? Charlotte’s private room is on the Hall’s second floor and has largely remained untouched since the incident.

The Curse and
Hauntings

The entirety of Blackrock Island is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of the 54 workers who died in the late 1800s fire. The workers, who were not given proper wages, living quarters, or even basic rights at the cotton mill, are thought to be unrested and have cast a “curse” on the Thornton family and the island itself. They’re said to bring bad luck and can even be vengeful at times. The anguished spirits of those workers are alleged as partially to blame for the 1989 Thornton Hall fire.

After that fire, the ghost of Charlotte Thornton, who died on her 21st birthday, is said to haunt the island. In the main hall and in the old ruins and the family cemetery, people have reported seeing the apportion of Charlotte. Many claim she is still in the ruffled red ball gown she’d worn as a costume for her masquerade birthday party—the very outfit she perished in. In the massive halls of the mansion, it is said that one can hear Charlotte’s spirit singing an eerie little tune in the night, and that that one can feel cold spots along with the constant, unnerving feeling of being watched. Some have claimed that objects move on their own and that the mansion just generally has a “creepy vibe” to it. It is said that, in Thornton Hall and especially on the second floor, repeatedly chanting this strange rhyme at night will cause Charlotte’s ghost to manifest, a whispery song to echo in the halls, and cold breezes to flutter past:

“Fire so red,
night so black,
dear sweet Charlotte,
please come back.”

The mainland locals, especially the children, have repurposed an old English nursery rhyme as a macabre and sad way to remember the tragedy surrounding Charlotte Thornton’s death:

“Ladybug ladybug,
fly away home.
Your house is on fire,
and your children are gone.
All except one,
sweet Charlotte Ann,
and she hid under the frying pan.”
